FAQ

Who are we?

First of all, we're a married couple: Hélène Sakurako and Stéphane, a Franco-Japanese woman and a Frenchman. Hélène loves teaching words, expressions and even Japanese culture to the people she meets. Stéphane, on the other hand, is in love with Japan, mainly for the food and certain values that the country conveys.

Then there's Julien, who is very interested in Asian cultures, particularly those of South Korea and Japan.

Julien and Stéphane have been colleagues in the same company for almost 7 years and work in the IT sector. They have a solid knowledge of how to create and administer a website. One thing led to another and as they shared their passions and hobbies, they realised that they had one in common (apart from video games and TV series!): Japan and its culture.

Eager to learn the language and frustrated by the applications on the market, Julien and Stéphane decided to create their own site to learn and also share with a community motivated by the same desire. Stéphane discussed the idea with Hélène, who agreed to help contribute content to the site.

And so Nihon Gakudou was born.

What does Nihon Gakudou mean?

Nihon (日本) means Japan.

Gakudou has two meanings depending on the kanji used to write it:

  • 学道 the path to learning Japan / Japanese
  • 学堂 the place where you learn Japan / Japanese

Your visits to Nihon Gakudou will help you discover and learn both the language and Japanese culture through kana, kanji, vocabulary and phrase cards, as well as the blog and other features that will arrive over time.

Nihon Gakudou aims to be a path to learning and a place to learn.

Where does the data displayed on the site come from?

The data comes from various external sources that we moderate and also from ourselves, based on our learning or on people of Japanese nationality that we know.
